Minister – Rev. Sue Genge
Susan (nee Adair) Genge was born and raised in Oshawa and has spent her entire life within The United Church of Canada. She was baptized, confirmed and married at Oshawa’s Northminster United Church where she later served on staff as a minister. Fond church memories from her childhood and youth at Northminster include her participation in the Sunday School, and Messengers, Explorers and C.G.I.T (Canadian Girls in Training) groups, and her participation in the Youth Group. Sue’s participation as a summer camper at the UCC’s Camp Pretoria (Oshawa) and as a camper, counsellor and director at the UCC’s Camp Quin-Mo-Lac (Madoc), and in a Christmas Youth Retreat at Five Oaks (near Brantford, ON) were very spiritually-enriching experiences which deepened her faith and led her toward many other faith-transforming opportunities.
In 1975, as an initiative of The United Church of Canada’s 50th Anniversary, Sue was one of 100 UCC youths selected for a month-long overseas exposure tour in a developing nation through the UCC’s International Youth Exchange. She represented Oshawa (now Lakeridge) Presbytery as a delegate in Hong Kong and found the experience to be transforming.
Sue earned a B.A. (Psychology and Religious Studies, 1978) at The University of Waterloo, and two theology degrees (Master of Religious Education, 1980; Master of Divinity, 2004) at the UCC’s Emmanuel College, which is part of Victoria College, Toronto School of Theology, and The University of Toronto. She earned a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) unit at the Peterborough Civic Hospital (1998) and served as an interim, part-time, supply chaplain at the Oshawa General Hospital from 1997-1998 (now Lakeridge Health Oshawa).
Prior to accepting the call to serve as Co-ordinating Minister at Kingsview U.C. (Jan.1, 2015-present) Sue served in professional ministry in Lakeridge Presbytery’s Kingsview U.C. (1980-83), St. Andrew’s U.C. (1984-88), Northminster U.C. (1997-2005), and Brooklin U.C. (2005-2014). Sue also served as a part-time supply minister at St. Pauls’ U.C. (Ajax).
With her husband Glenn, Sue has volunteered and served as Team Leader in nine builds with Habitat for Humanity International- in Trinidad, Guyana (2x), Mexico, Ecuador, Honduras, Botswana, Zambia and Bolivia. She has volunteered on HFH housebuilding projects in Cobourg and Oshawa. Sue and Glenn have co-hosted tour groups of pilgrims to Israel, Jordan, Mt. Sinai, Egypt, Turkey and Greece. Since 1989 they have been actively involved as participants and promoters of the UCC’s former Marriage Encounter and United in Marriage programs.
Sue and Glenn and their family are thrilled to be back with you at Kingsview as we serve God, our community and our world together through our varying ministries. We’re delighted that our children, their partners, our grandchildren and Sue’s parents are actively involved too!
Minister – Rev. Louise Sams
Choir Director – Melanie MacLeod
I was born in Tamworth, Staffordshire, England and emigrated to Canada in 1968 with my parents and younger sister. After attending high school in Scarborough, I obtained degrees from Trent University and started teaching in 1976. In a career spanning 30 years, I worked for the Scarborough Board of Education which later became the Toronto District School Board. I taught all grades from one through thirteen, was Vice Principal of a French immersion school and for nine years the Principal at Mary Shield Public School.
In the early 1980’s, I joined the choir at Kingsview where I sang first soprano and in 1986 was asked to become the Choir Director. I select anthems and hymns reflecting a wide range of musical tastes which glorify God. I pray that through the music both congregants and choristers will be brought closer to the Lord and that the power and beauty of God’s word will take root over and over again in the hearts of those who sing and those who hear the Gospel message.
Soli Deo Gloria… To God be the Glory
Organist – Greg Foreman
I came to Kingsview in the Fall of 1996, having been asked to fill in as organist/pianist and choir accompanist through the Christmas season while the search commenced for a permanent organist. I never imagined that I would be invited to hold this position, but I have been truly honoured and blessed to serve in this supporting role of the ministry of Kingsview.
I accompany the choir, plan and rehearse the praise sets, and play for congregational singing. My simple goal is to play in a way which encourages everyone to want to participate in singing, which is as much an act of worship as prayer. I always pray that the music I play will bring others into the presence of God, and that as a result they will be drawn into a closer relationship with Him.
Treasurer – Jim Paterson
I started coming to Kingsview with my wife Janice in 1979. I retired from General Motors Canada in 2005 after 32 years of service in various financial areas of the company. I am currently serving as Kingview’s Treasurer as well being a member of the Property Committee. I also assist with counting weekly donations before being deposited in the bank.
As Treasurer my duties include paying all bills involving expenses related to Kingsview. Additionally I am responsible for submitting the payroll for all Kingsview staff twice each month. I am a member of the Kingsview Council and report all financial transactions each month to council. All committee chairs require various levels of spending detail throughout the year in order to both track their current year spending compared to budget. I also serve as an analytical resource for budget preparation and submission.
Church School Superintendent and Office Administrator– Elizabeth Plancke
I became a member at Kingsview in 1999. I have been volunteering for over 12 years in the Kingsview Church School. I have been privileged to have taught children from nursery aged up to thirteen years old. I believe that the Church School is such a rewarding ministry and an important part of Kingsview United Church.
Wedding Convener – Krista Hester
I have been attending Kingsview United Church since the day I was born and I am very involved in not only worship but the music program, Sunday School, Outreach and Christian Development Committees and many other parts of the church.
As the Wedding Convener, I work closely with the ministers with the planning and preparation of the ceremonies that take place at the church. I work behind the scenes during the ceremony and also take care of the preparation ahead of time and clean up afterwards. I attend rehearsal prior to the ceremony with the minister to ensure the details are well taken care of to the couples’ satisfaction. I have always loved weddings and I am honoured to assist couples to ensure their special day is one to remember. Please contact the church office to obtain more details and to schedule a wedding.
